Frequently asked questions:
Why do I need Step Up?
Many students entering university for the first time become overwhelmed by the unfamiliar environment. It is a challenge to take responsibility for making personal and academic choices while dealing with demanding workload. The Step Up programme was developed for students to develop and practice life skills that will help you integrate into the university. In the Step Up class you will meet other students who are in the same position as you, deal with challenges as they arise and have an experienced facilitator who will help you with any difficulties you may encounter. Step Up functions as an extended orientation. Step up will give you the support you need as you need it since the course is structured so that the topics we cover address the issues as they arise.
What can Step Up do for me?
Step Up will give you the opportunity to develop the specific skills you need to manage a range of academic demands.
Your contact with your facilitator provides a personal and sympathetic contact in the EDU and the Faculty of Commerce. Your facilitator will be available to help you with any problems that may arise in the first six months and refer you to appropriate services on and off campus including counselling services if needed.
The course aims to develop your ability to think critically and reflectively about your career choice and make appropriate decisions to help realise your dreams, as well as enhancing self-confidence and self-efficacy in the complex higher education environment.
How does the course work?
You register for the programme in the first semester. No exams or tests are written, but a minimum of 80% attendance is required to obtain a course credit. Classes are small and interactive, and active participation is essential to derive the most benefit from these supportive practical life-coaching sessions.
